One Way to Make a MIDI Controller...

Livid Instruments are now offering a kit enabling the DIY enthusiast to create their own customised MIDI controller (cue a, "YAY!" from all digital AV enthusiasts who have looked at what's on the market and thought, "almost perfect, if only they'd included a..."). Have a look at the parts on their site and take a few minutes to watch their video:

It's interesting to follow how others are getting along with their builds.

From the Vaults to the Future...

The more I learn, the more I find there is to learn. Thankfully, I have a healthy appetite.

I stumbled across this version of history which is worth a read. Thanks Le Collagiste.

Another search / stumble session found this video which gives an interesting example of how the tools used can shape the quality of the end creation.
FAIRLIGHT!

When I first started becoming interested in live video work using PC the two pieces of software that seemed most attractive were VJamm and Motion Dive. I hear there's a new version of MD almost ready for distribution. Can't wait to give it a spin!

...and for those who are really on top of their AV game - here's a link to a couple of HD loops - stick those in your app of choice and see if your system can handle it!

www.LNAG.org

www.lnag.org had a little party / talking shop last week (Thursday 11th March) at Belfast Exposed to encourage people to use Irish Gaelic online. I provided a little tech support.

The atmosphere was convivial and the speakers were enthusiastic, both those in front of the mic and those who streamed in by Skype.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit!
Enjoy St Patrick's Day!

If you know some Gaelic; use it.

Staaltape is Back.

A long time ago cassette tapes were the medium of choice for independant record labels to release their wares to the discerning/disapointed masses.

Maybe you know Staalplaat? Do you like it?
If so, you may be pleased to learn that they have revived their Staaltape label. As you might hope/expect the new releases/re-releases come in some curious packaging.

Noise Synths - Old and New

Last year I posted about Derek Holzer's Neanderthal Electronics workshop at DAS.
Here's the old noise synth I made. Thanks Phil for the cigar box.

Since building that device I've been tinkering with various other projects. Here's a (as yet unhoused) battery-powered noise maker I got wheezing yesterday. The circuit is based on a Thingamagoop. Sadly I didn't do a sound check before recording, so you're not really able to appreciate the amount of low-end it produces, but trust me when I tell you it has a LOT of rumble to give. I'll post an update if I can find something pretty or odd to put it in.
